What is a Combination skin?

Combination skin is typically characterized by a complexion that is oily in some areas and dry in others. The T-zone is usually shiny and prone to breakouts, while areas such as the cheeks, jawline and temples can feel tight and dry. Large pores and a propensity for blackheads and blemishes can also be common characteristics of combination skin. Dealing with both dry and oily skin means finding the perfect skincare regimen that’s strong enough to exfoliate without irritating the skin.

What is T-ZONE?

Th e T-Zone is the part of your face that is made up of the forehead, nose, chin and area circling the mouth. This area is called the T-Zone because it shaped like the letter T. If you drew a big “T” on your face, all the skin under that T would likely be oily, while the areas left outside the T are dry and potentially flaky. The T-Zone is oiler than the rest of the face because it has a higher amount of oil glands. Oily skin tends to look shiny, greasy and unattractive because excess sebum production lubricates the skin day and night. With many individuals, the cheeks will be normal or dry when the T-Zone is oily – this is called Normal/Combination Skin, which is very common.

Symptoms

Symptoms of oily skin include:

•    Twenty minutes after washing your face, you see oiliness in certain parts of your face.
•    Your flaky areas are within your T-zone.
•    The pores on your nose are visibly larger than the pores on your cheeks and jawline.
•    You get breakouts and dry patches at the same time.
•    Your flaky areas are within your T-zone.

Causes

  • Genetics has everything to do with the type of skin you have.
  • The skin care products you’re using are too harsh on your nose, chin and forehead. If you’re using the wrong kind of moisturizer, it’ll clog up your pores.
  • Taking excess stress increase an androgen hormone which leads to excess oil production.
  • When out in the sun, you’re not using adequate protection.
  • Wrong skin care routine may cause you to have combination skin.

Prevention

  • Do change with the seasons - It’s prone to dry patches during the winter and breakouts and shine during the summer. So switch out your products as needed with the changes of the season.
  • Don't get stuck in a rut- Combination skin can be ever changing, so make sure your routine and the products you use keeps up with those changes.
  • Use a gentle facial cleanser - Wash them away with a gentle facial cleanser twice a day—once in the morning and once at night.
  • Stop touching your face - This is easier said than done. Your hands carry a lot of invisible dirt, and you don’t want to transfer that to your face, as it could end up clogging your pores.
  • Apply a moisturizer - don’t skip out on this step. In terms of the best moisturizer for combination skin, an oil-free moisturizer will be your best.
