What is Oily skin?

Everyone needs a certain amount of natural oil to keep their skin supple and moisturized. Skin type is determined by how much oil your skin produces; depending on this, your skin type can be categorized as dry or oily. An oily skin type is exactly what it sounds like – excess oil on the face produces a shiny or greasy appearance. This greasy appearance is the result of the overproduction of sebum from sebaceous glands. These glands are located under the skin’s surface. Sebum is an oily substance made of fats. Sebum isn’t all bad since it helps protect and moisturize your skin and keep your hair, skin shiny and healthy. Too much sebum, however, lead to oily skin which can lead to clogged pores, Blackheads, pimples, and acne.

Symptoms of oily skin include:

  • A shiny or greasy appearance
  • Obvious pores on the skin
  • Skin that looks thick or dull complexion
  • Frequent acne and pimples
  • Clogged pores and blackheads
  • Smooth texture
  • Large pores

Genetics – Genetics plays an important role in oily skin. Oily skin can be passed on through your genes, as having larger sebaceous glands that produce excess oil is a hereditary that can be handed down the family tree.
Environment – Excess humidity causes your skin to sweat and become oily. In humid areas, you can feel the excess moisture and oil as soon as you walk outside.
Over-Washing – If your skin is looking shiny, the first thing you want to do is wash your face using harsh products. Harsh products will result in leaving your skin dry.
Cosmetics – Makeup is a great tool for covering up acne, oil, and breakouts. If you use a product for combination skin or dry skin when your skin type is actually oily, you can either dry out your face or last causing more oil production or use a product that is too greasy.
Stress – We live in a stressful world. Our skin tends to overproduce oil in times of stress. We've got enough on our plates without having to worry about shine.

Try these tips to keep skin from getting excessively oily:

  • Use Cleanser, Toner and Moisturizer Twice Everyday
  • Use an Astringent Every Other Day
  • Apply a Facial Mask and Exfoliate Once a Week
  • Exfoliating is good for preventing pores from clogging.
  • Don't pick, pop, or squeeze pimples. They'll take longer to heal.
